The Dean Smith Center at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill is the 300,000 SF home to the UNC men’s basketball team. Summer Consultants provided electrical engineering design services for the replacement of the four video display boards which serve the arena.
Four new 100-foot LED video displays replaced the existing 25-foot displays. Four 75kVA transformers replaced the existing four 45kVA transformers. The new transformers provide power for the video boards and the equipment platform lights, while also having capacity for a future distributed antenna system (DAS). A new 250A electrical feeder serves two of the new video boards from the main switchgear, with an existing 225A electrical feeder serving the remaining boards. Wires and grounds were upsized to accommodate the voltage drop due to the length of the feeder.
The new video boards provide greater visibility for fans seated throughout the arena.
