Did You Know? PBS P-100 2024 Replaced with Interim CBS

As of February 24, 2024, a major change in federal design guidance took effect: the General Services Administration (GSA) has officially rescinded the PBS P-100 2024 and replaced it with the PBS Interim Core Building Standards (CBS).

What does this mean? The new version of the CBS offers a streamlined set of design criteria, bringing together laws, codes, executive orders, and standards, without the extra requirements previously added by P-100.

Starting January 21, 2025, any GSA project that is less than 50% complete, as determined by construction funding, may need to reassess and potentially revise its design criteria to meet the new CBS guidelines.

Not all disciplines are impacted equally:

  • Electrical design remains largely the same and must still comply with NFPA 70.
  • Fire protection and energy efficiency are likely to see the most change, given the removal of supplemental P-100 requirements.

Since the CBS is labeled as “interim,” we can expect additional updates and clarifications in the coming months. Stay tuned.
