My Experience as a Summer Intern: Electrical & Lighting

Over the past 12 weeks, I had the opportunity to be an electrical engineering intern at Summer Consultants. This internship has been such a great learning experience not only to learn about lighting and power distribution design, but also to learn about and understand the integration required with other disciplines such as mechanical, fire protection, architecture, etc. The training experience here at Summer was extremely beneficial. The first few days were dedicated to training where they taught CAD basics as well as a few hours dedicated to basic concepts within our discipline. There were also several trainings for both electrical and mechanical throughout the summer.

The mentorship was helpful to be able to work closely with someone and is always there to ask questions. I worked with Christian, and I really appreciated that he asked what I wanted to do during my time here, and explain concepts that I didn’t know, which truly allowed me to work on a variety of different projects. I worked on lighting calculations, renderings, and controls. I learned a lot about power distribution, riser/one-lines, doing motor calculations, and laying out power devices. Although I was already familiar with the software used, I became more comfortable working in Revit, CAD, and Agi32, as well as learning more with SKM.

The office has such a great environment, and everyone is always happy to help if you have questions. I also enjoyed the several events outside of the office (happy hours, picnic, summer summit) where I was able to talk to others in the office that I didn’t usually get to talk to you. Summer Summit was an interesting event where everyone from all the offices came together, and I learned about a lot of different topics. Overall, I really enjoyed my time interning at Summer as it was super valuable learning more about the industry and the career I want to pursue.
