Charles E. Smith Center Renovations

The George Washington University

The Charles E. Smith Center renovation has attained a LEED Gold rating. This 100,000 SF NCAA Division I sports facility was renovated over three phases. Design and drawings utilized Building Information Modeling (BIM) performed in Revit MEP.

Mechanical systems included a Dedicated Outdoor Air System (DOAS), natatorium dehumidification unit, and variable volume air handling units. The air handling units serving the 5,000 seat basketball arena were also replaced.

The plumbing layout had to be coordinated with large, shallow structural footers and existing buried services.

The project included a comprehensive renovation of all the electrical systems, including a 150 kW emergency life safety generator and broadcast media requirements.
